Cervical cancer screening
Latvia has run a cervical cancer screening programme since 2009, sending invitation letters to women in the target group.
- 25 to 29Interval: Every 3 yearsWhat is done: Liquid-based cytology at the gynaecologist
- 30 to 70Interval: Every 5 yearsWhat is done: High-risk human papillomavirus testing of the cervix
This structure has applied since 2021.
Screening is state-funded. With the invitation letter, no referral is needed. A letter may not arrive if a cervical test was done outside screening within the year before it was prepared, if you do not live at your declared address, or if you have had a hysterectomy. The invitation can also be received electronically at your e-address on the latvija.gov.lv portal.
Breast cancer screening invitations go to women aged 50 to 69 every two years, and the examination is by mammography.
Glossary

- a sample taken with a cytology brush from the cervix, detecting cell changes early.
- Liquid-based cytology
- the form of cytology used in screening for women aged 25 to 29.

Rīga and nationwide
- Veselības centru apvienība
states that a gynaecologist is available without a referral at all VCA medical centres in Rīga and across Latvia, with both adult and paediatric gynaecologists. Surgery is available in the day surgery units at VCA "Pļavnieki", "Jugla" and "Dubulti", and at the "Aiwa Clinic".

Providers performing screening tests can be found on the rindapiearsta.lv portal.
Choosing between doctors
- No referral needed. The gynaecologist is a direct-access specialist, so you can book directly.
- State-funded or private. Many providers offer both, and the state-funded route usually involves a waiting list.
- Pregnancy care. If you are planning a pregnancy, ask whether the doctor manages pregnancies and which hospital they work at.
- Surgery. If an operation is possible, ask whether the provider has a day surgery unit or works with a surgical clinic.
- Remote follow-ups. Some providers offer a repeat consultation by phone if the in-person visit was recent.
What a visit looks like
- No special preparation is needed, but it is better to schedule mid-cycle rather than during a period.
- If you have received a screening invitation letter, bring it.
- Bring previous smear and test results, plus details of medicines and contraception you use.
- At the visit the doctor examines you and, as needed, takes smears or performs an ultrasound.
- If a smear shows abnormalities, the doctor sets a follow-up and treatment plan, which may include colposcopy with biopsy.
Cost
The gynaecologist is a direct-access specialist, so no referral is needed for a state-funded visit, which carries a 4.00 EUR patient co-payment. Screening tests with an invitation letter are free. For pregnant women the state covers gynaecology visits, ultrasounds and a set of tests under Cabinet Regulation No. 611, while additional appointments and tests outside the programme are charged.

When to see a doctor
The Centre for Disease Prevention and Control states that in its early stages breast cancer causes no complaints or symptoms, which is why regular preventive screening mammography in healthy women matters, to find changes as early as possible.
A National Health Service information leaflet states that breast cancer is the most common malignant tumour among women in Latvia, with more than 1,000 women newly diagnosed each year. It is also among the most treatable cancers, particularly when found early.
Breast cancer presents differently in different women, and not every sign means cancer. A tumour can also develop without visible or palpable symptoms. If you notice a change, do not ignore it, and see a doctor as soon as possible.

Nationwide
The state-funded preventive breast examination can be done at any provider delivering it, including by mobile mammography. The list of providers is available from the National Health Service.
How to choose
- The invitation letter. With a letter you may attend any provider offering state-funded screening, so the nearest one will do.
- Mobile mammography. In the regions, check the mobile unit's schedule, since it may be closer than a hospital.
- Age and dense tissue. Ultrasound is used more often in younger women and dense breast tissue, so agree the method with the doctor.
- Earlier images. Using the same provider makes comparison with previous scans easier.
- Second opinion. Patients may freely choose the doctor and institution.
What the examination involves
- During mammography the breast is placed on a plate and imaged from several angles, then the process is repeated on the other breast.
- The breast is briefly compressed while the image is taken, which can be uncomfortable, but only for a moment.
- The mammography examination itself takes a few minutes.
- The result is collected in person at the provider where the examination was done, so you need to follow it up yourself.
- If anything suspicious is found, further tests are arranged at a specialist provider.
Cost
Breast cancer screening with an invitation letter is state-funded, and no referral is needed. Tests ordered after state cancer screening carry no patient co-payment. Mammography done on your own initiative outside the screening programme is either private or carries a co-payment, depending on the referral.

Paediatric gynaecology
H1 and trust strip
This page explains when a girl needs a paediatric gynaecologist and how to book a state-funded visit. It sets out the age from which a teenager can attend alone. It describes what a visit involves and why vaginal ultrasound is usually not performed. It also lists where these specialists practise in Latvia.

No names are listed for this specialty yet
We are adding them gradually. Doctors you can book are shown at the top of this page.
When to call 113 instead of booking
- Heavy bleeding that soaks through a sanitary product in under an hour.
- Sharp lower abdominal pain with vomiting, pallor or fainting.
- High fever together with lower abdominal pain.
- Injury to the genital area with bleeding or severe swelling.
- Inability to pass urine, with pain.

What a paediatric gynaecologist handles
A paediatric gynaecologist advises on questions relating to girls' genital health and development. Veselības centru apvienība states that consultations happen both preventively and in response to symptoms:
- Genital anomalies
- Inflammation, itching, rash, discharge or bleeding
- Infections, including sexually transmitted infections
- Irregular or painful periods, or periods that have not started
- Choosing suitable contraception
- Questions about development and puberty
One of the most common problems in young girls is labial adhesion, known as synechiae. Paediatric and adolescent gynaecologist Lāsma Līdaka explains that this is not a congenital condition, that behind the adhesion the vagina and uterus are almost always normal, and that treatment is applying a special cream, after which the problem usually resolves within a few weeks. The cream can be prescribed by a family doctor or a gynaecologist.
How to book and what is free
Paediatric and adolescent gynaecologist Lāsma Līdaka explains that paediatric and adolescent gynaecologists fall into two groups. Some hold a contract with the National Health Service, in which case no family doctor referral is needed and the visit is free up to age 18. Many tests and investigations, including ultrasound, are also free. These doctors work at the Children's Clinical University Hospital and other hospitals, and reception desks generally know which applies.
A child may attend a specialist consultation, including a gynaecologist, alone without a parent once they have turned 14.
Some providers state the age from which they see girls, for example from 12, so it is worth checking in advance.
Glossary
- Synechiae
- labial adhesion, which occurs in young girls because of low oestrogen levels.
- Vulvitis
- inflammation of the external genitalia, one of the most common complaints in paediatric gynaecology.
- Puberty

- Paediatric and adolescent gynaecology is an area of practice within that specialty.
- The certificate is valid for 5 years. Recertification requires 250 continuing education points plus a 48.38 EUR fee.
- Entry in the practitioners register must be renewed every 5 years.
How to verify this doctor's certificate
- 1Open registri.vi.gov.lv/rap.
- 2Enter the surname or practitioner identifier in the search box.
