Orthodontist in Latvia

when to bring a child, what the state covers and what you pay

An orthodontist discusses your bite, braces or aligners and how treatment is progressing. The doctor explains the next steps and how long treatment usually takes.

The consultation happens over video, so it works the same in Riga, Daugavpils, Liepāja, Jelgava, Jūrmala, Ventspils and Rēzekne.

Orthodontists in Latvia

The doctor list we currently have contains no separate entries under orthodontics. Orthodontists in Latvia work in dental clinics and specialist orthodontic centres, and any individual specialist's registration can be checked in the state register (opens in a new window).

The field's specialists are represented by the Latvian Orthodontic Association.

When to call 113 instead of booking

  • Facial injury with jaw deformity or inability to close the mouth.
  • Facial or neck swelling that makes breathing or swallowing difficult.
  • A knocked-out tooth together with loss of consciousness or head injury.
  • Heavy bleeding in the mouth that will not stop.

A broken bracket or a wire digging into the cheek is not an emergency, but it does need an unscheduled visit to your own orthodontist. Some clinics offer a specific emergency appointment for this.

What an orthodontist does

An orthodontist is the dental specialist who corrects bite and tooth position.

  • Diagnosis and treatment of bite problems
  • Correcting crowding and gaps
  • Early intervention during the mixed dentition in children
  • Treatment with removable plates, fixed brace systems and clear aligners
  • Working with oral and maxillofacial surgeons in severe jaw deformity
  • Retaining the result after active treatment

What the state covers

ServiceRule
First orthodontic consultationThe National Health Service funds this for children under 18
Orthodontic treatment without special indicationsNot state-funded, including for children
Congenital cleft lip and palate, including severe jaw and facial deformityOrthodontic treatment funded up to age 25

Some clinics state that, according to Latvian Dental Association data, children's orthodontics is in some cases partly covered from state funds.

When to bring a child first

Public sources recommend planning the first orthodontic visit at ages 6 to 7, when baby teeth are being replaced by permanent ones.

The arguments given for an early visit:

  • A growing jaw is easier to influence, so correction is simpler in childhood.
  • Early treatment helps avoid surgery later.
  • Straight teeth also affect speech.

Treatment types

MethodWhen it is used
Removable orthodontic platesIn young children during early mixed dentition, as front teeth change and permanent first molars erupt
Fixed brace systemsThe main treatment in the permanent dentition
Clear alignersAn alternative to braces in some cases
Orthodontic mini-screws or mini-platesAlongside braces, to provide anchorage and prevent unwanted tooth movement

Public sources explain that plates are usually used as early intervention to reduce the severity of the problem and make later treatment easier, and that in very rare cases they are the only treatment, since their scope is relatively limited. They are most often followed by main treatment with fixed systems.

Plates can be made in different colours and with appliqués to encourage children to wear them.

How to verify registration

  1. 1Open Health Inspectorate - register of medical practitioners (registri.vi.gov.lv) (opens in a new window).
  2. 2Enter the specialist's surname or practitioner identifier.
  3. 3Look for the orthodontist or dentist profession.
  4. 4Check the registration validity date.
  5. 5If your child needs the state-funded first consultation, check that the provider holds a National Health Service contract.

Where orthodontists practise

Orthodontists also work at other dental clinics across Latvia.

How to choose

  • Treatment length. Orthodontic treatment runs for months or years, so the clinic's location and your ability to attend regularly matter.
  • Emergency appointments. Ask whether the clinic offers one if a bracket breaks.
  • Children. Some clinics list paediatric orthodontics separately.
  • Working with surgeons. Severe jaw deformity requires collaboration with oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
  • Price transparency. Ask for the full treatment plan price, not just the cost of fitting the appliance.

How treatment works

  • It starts with a consultation and diagnostics, the extent of which depends on the situation.
  • An individual treatment plan follows.
  • During active treatment there are regular appointments to adjust the appliance.
  • Active treatment is followed by a retention phase.
  • For children, treatment may run in two stages: early intervention in the mixed dentition and main treatment in the permanent dentition.

Cost

In orthodontics a price usually cannot be quoted in advance. Ortodontijas Centrs states that its published prices are indicative and that the exact price is set individually after the consultation and once the treatment plan is drawn up.

Professional association and oversight

The specialty body is the Latvian Orthodontic Association, registration number 50008126621, contact Pēteris Sosārs, Latvian Association of Orthodontists (ortodontija.lv) (opens in a new window).

Dentistry as a whole is represented by the Latvian Dental Association, registration number 40008034096.

The sector regulator is the Health Inspectorate, while the National Health Service organises state-funded services.

Patient rights and complaints

If you have doubts about the quality of care, raise them first with the provider's management. If that does not resolve it, a written submission goes to the Health Inspectorate no later than two years after the alleged infringement, and is reviewed within 30 days, extendable to four months in complex cases. The procedure is set out on the Health Inspectorate site (opens in a new window).

Because orthodontic treatment is long and expensive, it is worth obtaining a written treatment plan and price before starting.

FAQ

When should a child first see an orthodontist?

Public sources recommend ages 6 to 7, when baby teeth are being replaced by permanent ones.

Does the state pay for braces?

No. The state funds the first orthodontic consultation for children under 18, but orthodontic treatment is private except in cleft and severe deformity cases.

What does treatment cost?

The exact price is set individually after the consultation and treatment planning.

How do plates differ from braces?

Plates are usually early intervention in children and are limited in what they can achieve. Braces are the main treatment in the permanent dentition.

What should I do if a bracket breaks?

Contact your own orthodontist. Some clinics offer an emergency appointment for this.
