Paediatric endocrinologist in Latviawhere to get treatment, how to verify certification, what this doctor does

A paediatric endocrinologist tracks a child's growth, weight and blood sugar, including in cases of type 1 diabetes. The doctor talks parents through the results and day-to-day treatment.

The consultation happens over video, so it works the same in Riga, Daugavpils, Liepaja, Jelgava, Jurmala, Ventspils and Rezekne.

When to call 113 instead of booking

  • A child with diabetes who is confused, floppy or unconscious.
  • Nausea and vomiting with deep, rapid breathing and an acetone smell on the breath.
  • Very high blood glucose with heavy thirst, frequent urination and weakness.
  • Low blood glucose that will not come up with a sweet drink or glucose gel.

What a paediatric endocrinologist treats

Paediatric endocrinology studies how the hormone system works in children and treats its disorders. The focus is on the hormone-producing glands and the processes governing a child's growth, development and general health.

  • Type 1 diabetes, and type 2 diabetes in children
  • Growth disorders, short stature, growth hormone questions
  • Early or delayed puberty
  • Thyroid disease: hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, nodules
  • Adrenal and pituitary disease
  • Obesity in childhood and adolescence

A family doctor or paediatrician is enough while a child is growing normally for their age. A paediatric endocrinologist is needed when the growth curve deviates, when puberty starts too early or is delayed, or when diabetes or thyroid disease is suspected. Children whose close relatives have diabetes, obesity or thyroid disease may need regular preventive checks even without obvious symptoms.

Subtypes

Paediatric endocrinology in Latvia has no separate sub-specialties. In practice the bulk of the work is diabetes care and growth disorders, with education for children with diabetes delivered through dedicated diabetes education rooms.

a blood marker showing average glucose over the past two to three months.
Hypoglycaemia
blood glucose that is too low, requiring immediate action.

a life-threatening diabetic complication with high glucose, vomiting and deep breathing.
Diabetes education room
a state-funded service teaching self-monitoring, insulin use and how to handle complications.

How someone becomes a paediatric endocrinologist in Latvia

  • Six years of medical study and a doctor's degree, at RSU or the University of Latvia.
  • Entry to the paediatric endocrinology programme requires a copy of a valid paediatrician certificate, or university confirmation of third-year residency in the base specialty "Pediatrs". For doctors without the paediatrics specialty the programme runs six years.
  • Residency in paediatric endocrinology. The RSU programme runs 3 years, 198 ECTS, tuition 5,800 EUR per year, led by Prof. Iveta Dzīvīte-Krišāne. Programme page: RSU residency programme.
  • The programme meets the European training requirements for paediatric endocrinology developed by the European society for paediatric endocrinology together with the European Paediatric Association board and approved by the European Union paediatrics section for medical specialists.
  • Content covers laboratory hormone diagnostics, adult endocrinology, immunogenetics, radiology, neonatology, genetics, paediatric intensive care, paediatric gynaecology, oncology, neurology and ophthalmology, inpatient and outpatient paediatric endocrinology, and diabetes education.
  • The state examination covers theory plus defence of a research project.
  • The certificate is valid for 5 years. Recertification requires 250 continuing education points, at least 60 per cent tied to the base specialty, plus a 48.38 EUR fee.
  • Entry in the practitioners register must be renewed every 5 years.

How to verify this doctor's certificate

  1. 1Open registri.vi.gov.lv/rap.
  2. 2Enter the surname or practitioner identifier in the search box.
  3. 3Confirm the listed specialty reads "Bērnu endokrinologs", not just "Endokrinologs" or "Pediatrs". Many of these doctors also hold paediatrics in the register.
  4. 4Check the certificate validity date. A permit or an adaptation period is not a certificate.
  5. 5If anything is unclear, see the register explanation page.

Choosing between doctors

  • Languages. Consultations run in Latvian and Russian, with some doctors also working in English.
  • Age limit. Paediatric endocrinologists see patients up to 18, after which care moves to an adult endocrinologist.
  • Diabetes care. If a child has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a provider with a diabetes education room matters.
  • Growth questions. Investigating growth disorders needs a bone age X-ray and hormone tests, so a provider that offers both saves visits.
  • Second opinion. A child's legal representative may freely choose the doctor and institution.

What a visit looks like

  • Bring the child's growth records, including previous height and weight measurements, plus test results and a list of medicines taken.
  • Information on endocrine disease in close relatives helps, since some conditions are inherited.
  • At the visit the doctor measures height and weight, assesses the growth curve and pubertal stage, and orders hormone tests, a bone age X-ray or ultrasound as needed.
  • If the child has diabetes, the doctor reviews self-monitoring data and refers to the diabetes education room where useful.
  • For chronic conditions the doctor arranges regular follow-up visits to track growth and treatment response.

Cost

Children under 18 are among the groups exempt from patient co-payments, so a state-funded paediatric endocrinology consultation on referral costs the family nothing. Diabetes education is state-funded: a family doctor, endocrinologist or paediatric endocrinologist can refer for first-time education, while repeat education requires a referral from an endocrinologist or paediatric endocrinologist. A private visit is paid by the parents or an insurer.

Professional association and oversight

No dedicated paediatric endocrinology association appears in the our records. The field is represented by the Latvian Association of Endocrinologists, registration number 50008173791, founded on 4 March 2011, whose purpose is to bring together endocrinologists and other doctors working on endocrine disease and diabetes care.

RSU states that its paediatric endocrinology residency programme meets the requirements developed by the European society for paediatric endocrinology.

Certificates are issued by the Certification Council of the Latvian Medical Association, founded in 1988. The sector regulator is the Health Inspectorate.

Patient rights and complaints

If you have doubts about the care a child received, raise them first with the institution's management, which must operate a complaints and suggestions system. If that does not resolve it, the child's legal representative may submit a written complaint to the Health Inspectorate no later than two years after the alleged infringement. It is reviewed within 30 days, extendable to four months in complex cases. The procedure is set out on the Health Inspectorate site.

Yes, for a state-funded consultation. At the Children's Hospital a child with unclear symptoms is seen first by a paediatrician, who refers on after initial tests.

What does a visit cost?

There is no co-payment in the public system for children under 18. A private visit is priced by the clinic's own list.

How do I confirm a doctor is certified?

Enter the surname in the practitioners register and check that the paediatric endocrinology specialty is listed and the certificate is valid.

How does a paediatric endocrinologist differ from an adult one?

A paediatric endocrinologist reads hormone function in the context of a growing body, including growth and puberty, and works with children up to 18.

How often is certification renewed?

Every 5 years, on 250 continuing education points.
